It was announced last month that Brazil-born supermodel Gisele Bündchen is accompanying the solid-gold World Cup trophy at today's final at the Maracana Stadium. The most coveted prize in world football travels in a custom made Louis Vuitton Official Trophy Travel case; the trophy case was commissioned by FIFA in 2010, first designed for the World Cup held in South Africa. It was crafted in the historic Asnières workshop in France, which produces only about 450 special orders a year, complying with only "the most exceptional requests" in the course of the Paris-based design house's 150-year history. It currently bears the flags of Argentina and Germany, the two final teams, as well as has all of the brand's signature detailing, including brass locks, Toile Monogram canvas and hardware corners.
Of FIFA's commission, Louis Vuitton said in a statement: "Today, Louis Vuitton is honoured to be able to bring its savoir faire to the most exceptional sporting competition of our time by accompanying the legendary trophy on its future travels around the world." Louis Vuitton claims it selected Bündchen as its model, as she is "a natural choice for the brand and FIFA, for epitomising the Brazilian woman and spreading her country’s colours all over the world." Bündchen is on hand at today's game (in a frock from Nicolas Ghesquiere's 2015 Cruise collection for Louis Vuitton, as well as the spiky coral-inspired belt and "lV" sling backs from the collection, pictured after the break below) with retired soccer star, Carles Puyol, to present to trophy to the German team.
Of the coveted prize, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter said: “The FIFA World Cup Trophy is our most precious asset. It’s the most coveted trophy, not only in the world of football but beyond. It succeeds in uniting fans all around the world in a healthy competition for the final prize. A trophy as precious as the FIFA World Cup Trophy deserves a travel case of the same elegance and prestige. From now on, the trophy will not only travel in safety, but it will also travel in style.”
