“The fashion world continues to be a topsy turvy place in 2017,” says online consignment site, TheRealReal. “Retail is undergoing major shifts and brick and mortar is both gaining and losing brands. While much of the focus is on the primary market, the resale market is not only gaining traction, it comes with its own set of unique insights into how people are consuming and selling luxury.”

To that end, TheRealReal has compiled its second mid-year report on the state of luxury resale for 2017. “From which brands are up and which are down among the top 20 bestsellers to specific items that are making their comebacks to how consignment affects retail, we’ve compiled the data and crunched the numbers to bring you some of the surprising trends taking shape this year.”

Some of the report’s most intersting findings: Balenciaga is the next Gucci, backpacks are the new “It” bags, synthetics are making a comeback, and flats and sneakers are trending over heels. “Gucci’s sell-through on the site is 10 percent stronger than Céline’s and searches for graphic and mixed prints are up more than 37 percent year-over-year,” founder Julie Wainwright said.

Also uncovered: The industry’s buzziest brands, a list that includes Supreme, with a 1,500 percent increase in sales; Off-White, 730 percent; Vita Kin, 240 percent; Jacquemus, 200 percent, and Monse, 22 percent, following an award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America and its designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia being named creative directors of Oscar de la Renta.
