Yesterday, we visited the brand new group of emerging designers at the CFDA Fashion Incubator's Open House. It seems like just yesterday that Waris Ahluwalia, Bibhu Mohapatra, Prabal Gurung, and others were working their magic in the CFDA's Garment District space, but this new group has certainly settled into their new home and the amount of talent is truly incredible! They have been hard at work on their brands since the announcement of the new class in August, namely working with NYU's Stern Business School to create and maintain solid business plans. The second group includes the oh-so-talented Arielle Shapiro of ARI DEIN, Daniel Vosovic, Doug and Ben Burkman of Burkman Bros, Christian Cota, Emanuela Duca, Luis Fernandez of NUMBER:LAB, Reece Solomon and Max Stein of Reece Hudson, Marc Daniels and Ricky Hendry of Isaora, Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein of Timo Weiland, and Whitney Pozgay of Whit.
I spoke with industry darling, Christian Cota, about his Fall 2012 collection, which he says was inspired by his native Mexico and features all original prints and embroideries. Of his Incubator experience thus far, Cota says: "I'm really getting to learn from those around me. I am thinking of things that I wouldn't have thought about and also seeing that things that I think are such big problems aren't such a big deal." Based on the looks of his latest collection (which is absolutely gorgeous) and his amazing new studio space, there aren't too many big problems in Christian Cota's world right now. Of his new space, which breakout star Prabal Gurung occupied for the past two years, NUMBER:LAB's Luis Fernandez said: "I’m hoping he left some magic dust behind." Not that the designer of the sleek, sophisticated luxury sportswear company needs any magic! More to come on the promising new class of Incubatees very soon.
