In a slightly different take on tour merch, Alexander Wang and Chinese megastar Li Yuchun – aka Chris Lee – have teamed up for a collection of costumes, as well as a tee for fans, for her “Growing Wild” tour, which kicks off in Beijing this month. Lee, who has worn custom Givenchy for recent tours, was hoping to “further evolve her look, one that has moved from sporty tracksuits to eclectic sophistication” for this tour, and looked to friend, Alex Wang, to help her achieve that. “Alex’s designs are unique, in that they combine a casual street style with an undercurrent of the dramatic. They are really cool, fun, and young,” Lee told Vogue.
“What I love about Chris is that she’s daring and she takes fashion risks, which I appreciate. I respect her fearlessness and the fact that she embraces a wide spectrum of styles,” Wang said. Per Vogue, “The costumes are a blend of casual—amped-up denim jackets and bombers—and the androgynous suiting Lee has become known for. It’s subdued when compared to the onstage wildness favored by some stars, but completely in line with Lee’s aesthetic.”
As of this month, fans of both Wang and the pop star will be able to get their hands on a t-shirt designed exclusively for Lee’s current tour. “We wanted to work with something graphic, which I don’t do extensively, but it felt right for this. So we took our bar code logo, which we have used on some designs and invites, and embedded Chris’s name in black and white. I initially thought Chris might want her name in Mandarin, but ultimately she preferred the English version,” Wang said of the collaborative tee.
Currently available on Wang’s website and exclusively in his stores in Beijing and Shanghai, it does not appear as though the tee will be available for sale at Lee’s concerts … at least, not yet.
