Confirmed: Peter Copping is in at Oscar de la Renta

Just about a week after the confirmation that Carven's creative director, Guillaume Henry (left), 35, is headed to Nina Ricci, Oscar de la Renta has confirmed Peter Copping's appointment as creative director of his New York-based namesake label. Henry will replace Copping (right) at Carven and Copping, 48, will be incorporated into Mr. de la Renta's succession plan for the brand. Now, the only question is: Who will take the creative director role at Carven?

In just five years, Guillaume Henry, who was the first designer to helm the relaunched Carven in 2009, "transformed Carven—a storied but sleepy French fashion house of old-school couture—into the cool girl’s label du jour," according to Vogue. As for British-born Copping, who will be responsible for all product categories, including ready-to-wear, accessories, bridal and home décor, he will report to Mr. de la Renta, and is in unique position.

As the New York Times' Vanessa Friedman states, Copping's "appointment makes him one of the few designers in the modern fashion industry to have actually been anointed as an heir apparent by a sitting creator, and it comes at time when a number of established designers are facing issues of succession, including Giorgio Armani and Ralph Lauren. As a result, it will be one of the most closely watched creative moves in recent years."
