Not too long ago, this “outfit lookalike” post was brought to my attention. Much like countless other posts dedicated to designers copying one another, this one obviously suggests that Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci was a bit too inspired by Yohji Yamamoto (below, left) in creating this sweater x skirt for Fall/Winter 2013 (below, right). At first glance, the two looks do, in fact, look a lot alike. As for whether this is a case of imitation, as opposed to inspiration, I’m not entirely sure. The pairing of a sweater with a long skirt is not novel. The use of embroidery/appliqués is also not novel. And the use of sheer materials is pretty commonplace, as well. Thus, individually, each of these elements is certainly not unique. Put together, while these certainly bear a resemblance, I can’t definitively say that this is indicative of any wrongdoing on Tisci’s part. Thoughts?
