Meet Essena O'Neill. She is an 18-year-old from Australia, who amassed half a million followers on Instagram with selfies, outfit and lifestyle posts, before announcing last week that she is done with social media. She deleted 2000 photos, renamed her account to "Social Media Is Not Real Life," and "changed the captions on existing photos with truthful anecdotes about posts she was paid for, how many tries it took to get the shot, and the pressures she felt to look perfect," per Elle. Her reasoning for doing so: She was sick of deriving her self-worth from likes, comments and favorites. She was tired of comparing herself to fellow Instagram "it" girls with more followers. She is done feeling like she is not good enough or not successful enough because she didn't have 1 million followers. Her recently uploaded video, entitled, "Why I Think Social Media Sucks," is making the rounds online and it provides an honest and eye-opening take on the downsides of the social media phenomenon.
