International luxury design house, Gucci, doesn't want you using its name, even if you are family. The company is taking legal action in Florence against Elisabetta Gucci, the great-granddaughter of its founder Guccio Gucci, after she announced that she will launch a chain of hotels under her own name with the first hotel to be in Dubai. (Maybe she was inspired by fellow Italian family Missoni's Hotel Missoni Edinburgh, which opened in June 2009). Either way, Gucci isn't standing for it, and the company is seeking injunctive relief.
The company had some words for Ms. Gucci: "Following the news that appeared in the last few weeks in some international media titles and the alleged involvement of Gucci fashion house with a certain hotel project, Gucci wants to make clear that it has no relationship to Elisabetta Gucci Hotels and that it is not involved in any project whatsoever with Elisabetta Gucci Hotels." In late July, the Italian court ruled that Elisabetta and her counterparts had to immediately cease any use of “Elisabetta Gucci” for any business or advertising purpose.
