Kanye West debuted his second collection yesterday in Paris. The collection has a very different feel in comparison to his arguably disastrous collection last fall, and not just because the garments were actually tailored this time. This collection feels very reminiscent of Givenchy, Costume National, and Balmain, which makes me (and quite a few critics) wonder how much of this collection was actually West's doing and how much of it is thanks to the big-name designers, who consulted on the line? There were classic Kanye touches, though. The fur backpack and black leather and other skins like astrakhan and crocodile dominated the show.
It seems to follow from last season that West still thinks that adding fur or leather to a garment makes it runway-worthy. However, while this tactic worked for a few of the looks, it proved excessive for most, and not excessive in a good way. This collection, while a huge improvement, is still lacking. Even my favorite pieces, the sleek leather leggings and the fur jackets, are not so distinguishable that I would turn to West's collection to buy them as opposed to Balenciaga or Fendi. I'm personally a bit torn about how I feel about West's dalliances with fashion, but regardless, the true test will be if any retailers decide to stock West's collection.
