Mary Katrantzou recently sat down with UK publication, The Telegraph, to discuss the rampant copying that occurs in the fashion industry. The designer said: "Everyone is being copied, and I don't have the budget to sue. When you put 'lampshade skirt' in Google, you get ASOS! It's so unfair!" Katrantzou is just one of many designers who have commented on the harmful nature of design piracy. However, she is an interesting designer to hear from as she is responsible for an arguably novel design, which is one element that the Innovative Design Protection and Piracy Prevention Act aims to protect. The lampshade skirt silhouette that has become a fast fashion favorite very well may have originated with Katrantzou, and yet, as of now, there is no legal protection for original construction. So, the lampshade skirt and other design constructions are fair game for fast fashion retailers to mass produce.
