Amsterdam-born, New York-based Anouk Torsing (IMG), who goes by Nouk, for short, was scouted quite a few times (five times in a year once) before she finally decided to give modeling a try after she completed her schooling. She made her debut walking in Chloe's Spring/Summer 2013 show and has since walked for Christopher Kane, Jil Sander, Marni, Céline, Dior couture, Oscar de la Renta, Damir Doma, and many others. She has graced the pages of Vogue Italia, Dazed & Confused, i-D, and the cover of Metal Magazine - just to name a few. She also appeared in Louis Vuitton's very recently released Pre-Fall 2014 lookbook. Last year she did the Chloe Pre-Fall lookbook. And in case that's not enough, she landed Valentino's Fall/Winter 2013 campaign. We caught up with the Dutch beauty, who talked about how her life is different now that she is a model, that Valentino campaign, what she misses most about Amsterdam and more ...
The Fashion Law - How old are you now and you are from Amsterdam, right?
Nouk Torsing - I just turned 20 last month. And yes, I am from Amsterdam, born & raised!
The Fashion Law - Where are you based when you're not traveling?
Nouk Torsing - I am never not traveling! haha. Even during the holidays, then I go to some nice place. But most of the time, I am in NYC. I love the city. It really feels like home.
The Fashion Law - I know you said that you were always tall and people told you that you should be a model. Prior to being discovered did you think you were "model material"?
Nouk Torsing - Not really. I was always the tallest and skinniest girl in my class. So, that made me think I might be able to do it but I didn't think I was pretty at all. I didn't know at the time that fashion also loves interesting faces.
The Fashion Law - How has your life changed since becoming a model?
Nouk Torsing - My life changed in almost every possible way! I live somewhere else. I have to speak a different language all the time. I rarely see my friends and family from Holland, while I used to see them almost every day. I travel way more and I meet more people. I am independent now, which is one of the best changes!
The Fashion Law - What do you miss most about Amsterdam, aside from your family and friends?
Nouk Torsing - I miss Amsterdam itself, it's canals, cute little cafes and it's food. I can't live without licorice and dutch cheese.
The Fashion Law - What has surprised you most about the fashion industry or modeling?
Nouk Torsing - How much smaller the industry is than I initially expected. Where ever I am, I always run into to people I know, which is great. It is like a big travelling family.
The Fashion Law - You appeared in Valentino's Fall/Winter 2013 campaign. Have you noticed any changes in your career since landing that ad campaign?
Nouk Torsing - I have. I definitely got more jobs because of the ad and I feel like people treat me with a little more respect. A big campaign is so hard to get. You cannot imagine how happy I was when I heard the news. It is my biggest achievement so far!
The Fashion Law - Did you just die when you found out that the job went from being an option to being confirmed?
Nouk Torsing - Yes I did! It was the most amazing moment: I came to NYC for work for the first time, and I was in the car from JFK airport when my booker called me. Right at time moment when he told me I got the campaign, I remember that I saw the skyline of manhattan looming up. It was magical. I barely knew I had the option!
The Fashion Law - Aside from that amazing campaign, how do you think you are different from other models?
Nouk Torsing - I think I have a stronger motivation and more willpower than most models. I had to fight to even be able to try modeling, as my parents were against it. When I finally finished high school, I really had to prove myself and make it happen. Also, I often hear I don't look like anybody else. So, my look is different, too.
The Fashion Law - You’ve been really successful so far and you’re so gorgeous. Do you think you’re pretty?
Nouk Torsing - Honestly ... Not really. Haha. I am not sure if this is a smart answer, but it is the truth. But I am content. I think I am special, not the typical kind of beauty. Let's say I don't think I am pretty in a way that most people find pretty, at least not without the right hair and make up! ;)
The Fashion Law - What are you obsessed with right now?
Nouk Torsing - Warmth!! And anything that will keep me warm this winter: big sweaters, chai tea lattes and ski socks.
