Since being discovered in 2012, Belgium-born and based Caroline Davis (Women Milan, Elite London) has gone on to walk for Christopher Raeburn, Neil Barrett, Just Cavalli, Simone Rocha, and Dolce & Gabbana couture, among others. You may have seen her in Cynthia Rowley's newly-released F/W 2014 lookbook or in the Porsche Design F/W 2014 show yesterday! She has been the face of "it" Argentinian accessories brand, Mishka, for several seasons now, as well as for Thomas Coccimiglio (print designer to Isabel Marant). We caught up with Davis, who spoke about being discovered, Antwerp, walking in Dolce & Gabbana's first ever haute couture show, and more ...
The Fashion Law - How old are you and you are from Antwerp, right?
Caroline Davis - I'm 24 years old, and yes, I live in Antwerp. The city were I grew up and where my family lives. But my dad is from England and my mom is from Paris.
The Fashion Law - When were you discovered?
Caroline Davis - In 2012. My friend, who is a photographer, once took a picture of me after 2 years of friendship and told me "actually you look pretty good on this picture". The day after I stood in my mother agency with a contract in my hands to be a model. I didn't expect that it was going happen. I thought we were in Brussels to go shopping!
The Fashion Law - Prior to being discovered, did you think you were "model material"?
Caroline Davis - Not at all! I have massive dumbo ears. When I was young, I was always bullied because I was a little bit skinny and nerdy and I had giant ears! :)
The Fashion Law - What were you doing prior to starting modeling?
Caroline Davis - I had just started school at university, studying social work and working with drug addicts. And I finally graduated about three weeks ago!
The Fashion Law - How has your life changed since becoming a model?
Caroline Davis - My point of view on life has completely changed. Before I started modeling, I was focused only on studying. Books are still my run-a-way in life, but they are not the only thing in my life anymore. I started to go out more, made a lot of new friends, and I became more confident.
The Fashion Law - How do you think you are different from other models?
Caroline Davis - I think it's my ears that make me more special than other models. Also, I know that for some reason, people love my cheekbones.
The Fashion Law - You’ve been quite successful. Do you think you’re pretty?
Caroline Davis - I learned more to live with my dumbo-ears but still didn't accept them completely. So no, I don't think I'm pretty.
The Fashion Law - What have been some of your favorite jobs so far?
Caroline Davis - My favorite job is absolutely the one I did for Dolce & Gabbana. It was their first haute couture show. They flew me in from Madrid to Sicily and I stayed in the most amazing hotel for 5 days ( just to relax a bit before the show). The show was beautiful and the dresses were all perfect!
The Fashion Law - Antwerp is such an incubator for amazing fashion designers. How do you think the fashion scene is different there than other places that you've lived?
Caroline Davis - I think fashion in Antwerp is more "careful" than in London, for instance. In London nobody really cares what you are wearing but in Belgium we try to dress up a bit. Also in London... you have a lot of hipsters, I think. There are not many of them in Antwerp.
The Fashion Law - What are you obsessed with right now?
Caroline Davis - Oh, that's a hard one! I'm obsessed with so many things actually. My dog, Basiel. The sweetest thing ever! Argentina. One day I will move there, just because I'm in love with the weather and all the nice people. And time. I'm always late. So, my new thing in the year 2014, is to try to be on time. Everywhere I go for a whole year!
