After being discovered in late 2011, Reece Sanders (who is repped by New York Models, MGM, Marilyn, and FM, among others) has became a huge name in modeling nearly overnight. He kicked off his career walking for Hardy Amies in January 2012, and then for Dior Homme, J.W. Anderson, Lanvin, Paul Smith, Juun J., and Costume National, among many, many others that same season. He has fronted a couple Topman ad campaigns, covered Hysteria and The Wild Magazines, and graced the pages of Vogue Italia, Another Man, CLIENT, Hero, and D Magazine - just to name a few. We caught up with Reece, who talked about getting scouted, whether he is "model material," "legends" Paul Smith and Alber Elbaz, and more ...
The Fashion Law - How old are you and you're from Nottingham, right?
Reece Sanders - I am 21. However, I was born on a leap year (29th of February). So, technically I am 5! And yes, I'm from Nottingham!
The Fashion Law - You were scouted one night when you were drunk right after you had gotten a tattoo. Prior to that did you think you were "model material"?
Reece Sanders - Haha yeah I was pretty drunk. However, just to clear things, now a-days, I hardly touch the devil juice! Nahh I didn't think I was model material. I've never been much of a looker and I'm fine with that! I have a big personality that gets me by! Fortunately, being ugly came into fashion. So, it worked out well!
The Fashion Law - You say that you're not a "looker," and yet, the fashion industry has really embraced you, in large part because of your looks. Has that affected the way you see yourself?
Reece Sanders - Well ... If you don't embrace your own beauty nobody else will, right? Physical appearance doesn't mean shit to me. You could be the best looking person in the world but still be a nob head. Alternatively you could be Quasimodo's ever more horribly disfigured cousin and be an absolute gem of a person. If you're judging someone on looks then you're obviously a dick. It's how you hold yourself as a person and how you rock your look that makes you beautiful. Everyone can be beautiful. Sitting on social networking sites saying "my breasts are too small, my hair is shit" isn't going to help! I could have spent my life sitting around saying "my ears and nose are too big" but where would that have gotten me??? Carpe diem!!!! People need to lose their insecurities and focus more on their positives!
The Fashion Law - How do you think you’re different from other models?
Reece Sanders - A lot of models' personality is based on modeling. I just want to make as much money as I can so I can give my mum enough money not to work again, spoil my girlfriend and give my mates opportunities like I have.
The Fashion Law - What do you like to do when you're not working/traveling?
Reece Sanders - Go home and hang round with my friends like we're still kids. I hope we never grow up! I hope we're all best mates when we're 80 and we're still climbing trees and playing football!!
The Fashion Law - I know this is such a cliche question but I actually want to know: What would you want to be doing if you weren't a model?
Reece Sanders - I used to be a youth worker. I wanted to be a youth worker since I was 14! It's my dream job! I was fortunate enough to have that job once upon a time and I hope to have it again when modeling comes to an end!
The Fashion Law - You’ve worked with a variety of really talented designers and for some amazing design houses, Dior Homme, Dries Van Noten, J.W. Anderson, Juun J. etc. Is there a designer that you especially like, aside from their clothing?
Reece Sanders - Alber [Elbaz] from Lanvin! Paul Smith! Two absolute legends! Also, an urban clothing, BlueCheese clothing. I met Mr Cheese through his clothing as a fan (he's also from my area). He's obviously not as successful as these brands, but that's not the route he's taking. Anyway, the guy is the nicest guy I've ever met! He's one of my boys now!
The Fashion Law - I know you were in Japan recently (you may still be there now, I'm not sure). How is that? Have you done any crazy jobs?
Reece Sanders - I'm still here!! Not so much this time, but last time I did an advert for the Rolling Stones' new beer. That was the most mental shoot ever!!
The Fashion Law - What are you obsessed with right now?
Reece Sanders - Music, Tropicana and the programme Gator Boys!!!
