The Fashion Law Exclusive - Raf Simons, the critically acclaimed Belgian designer who serves as the creative director at Dior, is teaming up with American artist Sterling Ruby for his namesake menswear collection for Fall/Winter 2014. Raf Simons has made no secret of his passion for art, studying Industrial Design and Furniture Design before venturing out into fashion. From his collections to the venues he chooses for his past runway shows, Simons is a genuine art enthusiast. This season, his enthusiasm will be showcased in an even more obvious fashion: by reaching to long time friend Sterling Ruby to collaborate on the Fall/Winter 2014 collection.
The novelty this season is, in part, the label's name change: Raf Simons/Sterling Ruby instead of the usual Raf Simons moniker. “For one season, the brand ‘Raf Simons’ will not exist,” says Simons. The collection, a true collaboration according to Simons, is the result of a longstanding friendship between the two, as well as a two-way admiration-turned-artistic and fashion collaboration. Simons further states that the collaboration between himself and the Los Angeles-based artist (who notably inspired several designs in his Dior debut) is "a men’s fashion collection, not an artwork." As for Ruby, he says the collection "was less of a challenge than you might think. In the last couple of years, I have been producing my own work clothes to wear at the studio, work shirts, pants, and jumpsuits, and in my work I have been thinking about the moment the utilitarian object becomes an aesthetic object.”
This seems to be yet another example of the strength of Raf Simons, the brand but even more so, the individual. His ability to continually reinvent himself is what makes the anticipation among his fans palpable and his show one of the highlights of Paris Men's fashion week. He will present his collection on January 15th.
