Nylon magazine isn't the only publication undergoing major changes. SCENE magazine, a subsidiary of Observer Media Group was shuttered late last week due to financial woes. SCENE, which was under the creative direction of Peter Davis, was undoubtedly a risk given its timing. Of its Feb 2012 launch, the New York Times wrote: "It is either daring or delusional to start a society magazine at a moment when many consider both NY society and magazines to be a fading concept."
The Times further held that "a gambler’s spirit is necessary to start a print magazine in a moribund publishing environment — not to mention in a city is still simmering with Occupy Wall Street style rage toward the rich." It appears that the Times was right. However, SCENE's ex-EIC certainly has something noteworthy in the works, as it seems he always does. In fact, Davis seems optimistic for his next venture, saying: “It’s all for the best. I’m personally focusing on the digital world, which really is the future. I will use my social-media savvy and large number of followers, with my editorial vision, to do something really exciting and new next.”
