Manolo Blahnik has been getting a lot of media attention lately. First, the NYT featured an article about how Manolos are making a come back. Now Manolo is back in the news but this time, the reason for publicity is not so great. On Friday, a Columbia cocaine smuggling network was uncovered by police in Barcelona. How is Manolo Blahnik involved? Well, the Spanish luxury shoe designer isn't personally involved but his name certainly is! the smugglers were transporting a liquid form of cocaine in the shape of stilettos, which would later be broken back down into powder. When I say stilettos, the drug dealers weren't using Louboutins or Jimmy Choo's. They were molding the coke into Manolo replicas and referring to the makeshift shoes as Manolos. No word yet on what the exact Manolo designs were, but I would love to know!
So, why Manolos? My theory: either these drug lords are big fans of Sex and the City or they know that Manolos are making a big comeback due to recessionary-induced trend towards low-key fashion. Hence, the movement away from flashier Louboutins and Jimmy Choo's. Regardless, something tells me this isn't quite the type of press Manolo was looking for!
