Cult sneaker brand, Vans, is teaming up Takashi Murakami for a collaboration this is actually quite noteworthy. The Japanese artist, who is of the most acclaimed artists to emerge from postwar Asia, is known for his contemporary Pop synthesis of fine art and popular culture, particularly his use of a boldly graphic and colorful anime and manga cartoon style. For the fashion crowd, however, Murakami is likely best known for a long-standing collaboration with Louis Vuitton when the house was under the helm of Marc Jacobs (and his work for Issey Miyake Men by Naoki Takizawa).
Murakami began working with Jacobs in 2002, contributing artwork, which was used in the design of a series of LV handbags, and then re-envisioned the fashion house’s signature monogram for the multicolore designs, monogramouflage, cherry and cherry blossom print designs and more. Music fans will know Murakami’s work from the cover artwork for Kanye West’s Graduation album, as well as his direction of West’s animated music video for Good Morning.
