The Balenciaga, Ghesquière Trial to Take Place This Summer

A date has been set for the pending legal battle between Balenciaga and its former creative director, Nicolas Ghesquière (who is now creative director at Louis Vuitton). According to WWD, "the Tribunal de Grande Instance of Paris has set July 1 — which falls between the French men’s shows and couture — to hear oral arguments in the civil case, which kicked off in September." Balenciaga's parent company, Kering slapped Nicolas Ghesquière with a breach of duty of confidentiality lawsuit following some statements he made in an interview with System magazine after his departure from the house.

The comments at issue? Well, “I was being sucked dry, like they wanted to steal my identity while trying to homogenise things” and Balenciaga has plans to “open up a load of stores in really mediocre spaces”. Balenciaga is alleging that the house’s ex-director’s comments are in breach of his confidentiality agreement with the house. This is essentially, although indirectly, a battle of the two biggest fashion players, as Kering owns Balenciaga and its rival LVMH owns Louis Vuitton, where Ghesquière is now serving as creative director. More to come …
