Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra, the dynamic duo behind New York-based label Costello Tagliapietra, debuted their first foray into menswear this week. After nearly a decade of producing covetable and slightly under-the-radar womenswear (a delightful aspect of their brand for die hard fans), the duo is beginning to offer pieces from their own personal style to the public. The pair, who are almost always seen in tucked-in flannel shirts and hiking boots, topped off by their easily recognizable and well-manicured facial hair, hinted at a personal style-influenced collection last year when we spoke to them; they do make all of their own clothes, after all! Quite fittingly, the first garment in their collection (which will be "very piece driven, like building blocks"), the Perfect Cardigan, is the piece that Jeffrey and Robert say they feel most comfortable in. Not that this should surprise fans of the label, as photos of the pair show that when they venture outside of their flannel shirt uniform, it’s usually to reach for a loose fitting cardigan. And in true Costella Tagliapietra form, the addition of menswear is not the only noteworthy happening at the brand …
The Perfect Cardigan, which boast contrast grosgrain trim at the pockets and ultrasuede elbow patches, are technically a unisex item and are meant to be worn comfortably, which helps explain why the cardigan is only offered in two sizes (Small to Medium, and Large to X-Large, naturally). The cardigans are a steal at $245, and you can find a number of the label’s favorite stylish men and women modeling them on the recently revamped Costello Tagliapietra website (visit it here!!!!).
We caught up with the award winning duo to chat about the new site, of which they said: "We wanted a new world for our website to exist in with the idea that it could be more interactive, dynamic and amorphous; less static with more humor." Turns out, the duo, with the help of their site developer, DreamTheEnd, found a way to partner directly with Tumblr and with the additional support of BlkDot to create an opportunity for a new way to sell off the site. The designers elaborated, saying: "Now no matter how many times an image gets shared or Tumbled it is always available to purchase from! We saw this new site as a way to fully integrate the worlds of Costello Tagliapietra and make the picture clearer." They achieved this by way of a very Costell0 Tagliapietra ad campaign, which features a stellar cast, including Tumblr evangelist Valentine Uhovski, Editor in Chief of Crushfanzine Khary Simon, DJ Mia Moretti, model and entrepreneur Linda Rodin, Julie Lee (the Head Librarian of MET Costume Institute), and Robert and Jeffrey (of course), among others. "Working closely with our stylist, Ketevan Gvaramadze and photographer, Michael Beauplet we set out to create a campaign that would gather together our friends and muses, the people we love and are inspired by to represent the brand," Robert and Jeffrey further explained.
With all of this info in mind, you’ll have to act quickly - the label’s first venture into menswear comes in limited numbers (because the duo is cool like that), and each colorway of their #perfectcardigan, as they’re calling it, is limited to 100 pieces. Here’s hoping that we see more menswear, or at least more desirable unisex pieces, from the very talented pair.
