With that in mind, Lyst compiled its year-long search and sales data to determine 2016's most popular trends – and the most coveted products within each category – in the USA.
Here are the top 16 (which, as you will be able to see quite clearly, are highly driven by the stylistic penchants of Rihanna, the Kardashian/Jenner/Hadids, Kanye West, the industry’s most watched-bloggers/influencers and the runway, of course) …
1. Puma sneakers
The brand has seen a 183% increase in popularity with major celebrity endorsements from Rihanna to Kylie Jenner and Cara Delevingne leading the charge. Topping it all off, Rihanna’s creepers were recently named shoe of the year.

The category has exploded this year with over 476% growth since this time last year, despite debuting in 2015. For every pair of fluffy Gucci Princetown backless loafers that came on Lyst this year, 180 people tried to buy them.

3. “It” Bags
J.W. Anderson’s Pierce bag was the hottest handbag of the year, as seen on fashion bloggers and editors’ instagrams during Fashion Week and beyond. During September Fashion Week alone, more than 750,000 people searched for a J W Anderson pierce bag on Lyst. The Pierce bag is responsible for a 3x increase in traffic to J.W. Anderson’s designer page overall this year.

4. Puffer coats
Searches for puffer jackets increased 280% in October, despite warm temperatures. Rihanna wore this mega puffer by Raf Simons in August and it sold out in less than two weeks.

Sales of chokers increased 230% this year, hitting peak popularity in July.

6. Round sunglasses
Lyst saw an average increase of 48% in sales for the category this Summer peaking in August with a 78% increase.

8. Fishnet Stockings
Fishnet stockings have come back fiercely this year with a 96% rise in sales since 2015.

9. One piece swimsuits
The one-piece swimsuit garnered 6% more searches than bikinis in July, claiming a major upset in the swimwear category. When Taylor, Cara and Gigi all wore matching one pieces at Taylor’s 4th July party Lyst saw a 365% increase in searches for swimwear brand Solid & Striped.

11. Straight leg jeans
While stretchy skinny jeans are still number one in sales, the straight leg receives 2 x more searches.

12. Slip dresses
Following this year’s 90’s theme, slip dresses have come back into popularity and their sales say the trend is here stay.

13. Lampshading (with oversized hoodies)
The no-pants trend has been worn by many celebrities including the infamous Kardashian Klan who can be seen touting oversized Yeezy sweatshirts around town. Vetements has also been a major player with its oversized gear.

Pink was the fifth most popular color on Lyst for women’s clothing this year (behind the typical leaders: black, blue and grey and white). This represents a phenomenal increase in demand with an increase of 810% more page views for pink products this year compared to 2015.
