Givenchy couture may be on its way out, but it is nevertheless a great example of the cycle of inspiration that exists in the world of fashion. Some retailers, namely Forever 21 and H&M, favor imitation, in lieu of inspiration. However, Givenchy, at least for Spring 2012, certainly took some inspiration from a tribal tradition and quite possibility from Christian Dior couture. You may remember that for Fall/Winter 1997, Dior showed massive and intricate earrings (likely derived from ancient tribal tradition) in its couture show. About fifteen years later, Givenchy showed similarly sized earrings, in addition to those cult-worthy nose rings. Imitation? Certainly not. The appearance of the two sets of earrings is noticeably different. However, it could be said that Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci was inspired by Galliano's larger than life accessories. Either way, is it without question that both were inspired by ancient tradition, and this is perfectly ok. A certain amount of inspiration is absolutely necessary in fashion.
