The first looks at the 2018 Pirelli Calendar are here. Shot by British photographer Tim Walker this time around, the exclusive annual project features a lineup of all black models, actors and other famed faces, all of which have joined for an "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" theme. Of his choice of theme and casting, Walker recently said, “It’s never been done before. Alice has never been told like this.”
As noted by the Guardian, "This is not the first time Pirelli has featured an all-black lineup – in 1987, a 16-year-old [Naomi] Campbell posed topless for an edition that featured only black models."
Campbell is back for 2018, and plays the Royal Beheader. She is joined by Lupita Nyong’o as a dormouse, Sean “Diddy” Combs as Campbell’s fellow beheader, South Sudanese-Australian model Duckie Thot as Alice, Whoopi Goldberg as the Royal Duchess and Sasha Lane as the March Hare. Adwoa Aboah has been shot as Tweedledee. And RuPaul will also appear as the Queen of Hearts.
The calendar, itself, which is published by the Pirelli company's UK subsidiary, dates back to 1963. It is largely known for its limited availability - available only as a corporate gift to a restricted number of Pirelli customers and celebrities - as well as for its selection of world-class photographers that have been selected to shoot the calendar over the years, including Peter Lindbergh, Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel, Helmut Newton, Patrick Memarchelier, Steve McCurry, Mario Sorrenti, Karl Lagerfeld, and Terry Richardson, among others.
Peter Beard, Inez & Vinoodh, Mart & Marcus, Nick Knight, Bruce Weber, and Mario Testino have also shot the annual calendar for Pirelli.
