Justin O’Shea and Veronika Heilbrunner, the much sought-after street style couple behind luxury e-boutique mytheresa.com, weigh in on fashion for him and for her ...
Heilbrunner: “When I get dressed in the morning the first question I ask is, ‘What am I going to be doing today?’ It doesn’t sound particularly fashionable or glamorous, but it’s important that I’m in an outfit and shoes that I can be comfortable in all day.
Of course ultimately I do want to look good, and I like it when my boyfriend thinks I look good too. But that doesn’t mean wearing something short and tight. For me dressing sexy might be showing off my shoulders in a halter neck jumpsuit or perhaps a little transparency, like a sheer blouse buttoned up to the top with a black pant.
As a fashion editor, I gravitate towards the exciting statement pieces, and like many women my tastes tend to be broad-ranging. Often though, the things that I like don’t necessarily suit me. My boyfriend Justin is always very honest with me, and he’ll tell me when something doesn’t look flattering even when I’m very attached to a certain look. He’s helped me figure out that the simpler pieces look best given my height, and that can be as basic as a black tee and black pants.
Justin is very particular about clothes, but of course that comes with the job. I love all his perfectly tailored suits and ties, and often I borrow his coats, which comes in handy when we’re traveling. He has this dark blue Balenciaga coat which is amazing and a little oversize on me. In fact there have been times that we’ve coordinated accidentally, and we’ll have to change! To be honest I love him best dressed simply, too, in a tee and jeans.”
O'Shea: “I remember first meeting Veronika at an Acne Studios showroom in Copenhagen, there was this hot tall blonde girl across the room. My initial attraction had nothing to do with her style (I am a man after all!), although I do remember that what she was wearing that day—high-waisted Levi’s denim shorts and a white tee with a motorcycle jacket and Acne Studios ankle boots.
As a man, I don’t get to wear the clothes I buy for the site but with Veronika I get to see the clothes come to life. Our tastes are quite different on the whole. I remember when Raf Simons did those longer mid-century modern dresses for Jil Sander’s spring 2011 collection and suggesting them to Veronika even though it was very different to her style. I think fashion is all about contrasts, and the idea of someone as fun as and laid-back as her in a sophisticated look works so perfectly.
Personally I do like her best in black jeans, black boots, and a black tee. I find it more sexy when a girl is undone, when she isn’t wearing makeup. And I don’t like it when a dress distracts the attention away from Veronika’s face. You should notice a woman before you notice her clothes, it shouldn’t be like she’s walking around with a da Vinci painting on her back.
As much as I like to take Veronika shopping, I don’t like to shop with anyone when it comes to my closet. I do love seeing her wearing my clothes though, it’s that age-old thing of waking up and seeing your girl in your button-down shirt. She wears some of my Balenciaga coats and it’s annoying because sometimes she looks cooler in them than I do.”
