Who said patents are not issued for fashion designs? Well, for the most part, they aren’t but there is the Lululemon exception and here is another: the 5-inch plexi-glass heel of Jimmy Choo’s Niagara pump. Jimmy Choo, Ltd. filed its patent application in March 2011, with the inventor listed as Sandra Choi, the Creative Director and designer of Jimmy Choo. The London-based design company was granted a design patent for the “ornamental design for a heel for footwear” on Tuesday.

The Niagara pump is part of Choo’s Crystal Anniversary Collection, marking the luxury design house’s 15th anniversary. The company released the shoe back in 2010 in silver and electric blue, and it retailed for $2,500 until it sold out. Saks Fifth Avenue’s description of the shoe at issue: “Silvery suspended flakes seem to float in the transparent heel and platform of a crystal-studded sandal with double ankle straps.”
