Michael Kors has landed on the top of the Most Searched for Fashion Designers of 2014 list compiled by Microsoft’s search engine Bing. Kors is up from the number two spot on last year’s list just after Victoria Beckham. (Beckham, who won the Best Design Brand Award at last night’s British Fashion Awards, is noticeably absent from this year’s Top 10). Louis Vuitton came in at number 2, up from number 10 last year. Third place went to Ralph Lauren, followed by Tory Burch, Gucci, Kate Spade, Burberry, Chanel, Versace, and BCBG Max Azria. What exactly this list means, if anything, is up for debate.
Regardless, it has been a noteworthy year for Kors (despite falling stock prices). The NYC-based affordable luxury brand launched a shoppable Instagram account, expanded to tech accessories, and showed in Shanghai. Louis Vuitton’s jump to number two probably makes the most sense given the relatively recent appointment of Nicolas Ghesquière as creative director, the opening of the Fondation Louis Vuitton this Fall, and the brand’s ongoing efforts to revamp on the heels of a stretch of poor growth due to logo fatigue.
With this in mind, Maison Martin Margiela should place well on next year’s list, along with Oscar de la Renta, both of whom welcomed new creative directors as of late.
