On the heels of copying claims, Snapchat has ever-so-carefully come clean about copying some of its popular photo-filters. The Southern California-based company, which is valued at upwards of $20 billion, has admitted that its employees copied the designs of a number of makeup artists, who share their designs on YouTube, Instagram, and other sites, in order to create some of the app’s photo-filters.

Snapchat’s statement came after Medium.com site, The Ringer, posted an article detailing the similarities between Snapchat’s filters and the work of various indie artists. The site noted that in addition to not giving credit, Snapchat doesn’t make any attempt at contacting artists to get permission to use their designs, especially when filters are created in partnership with big-name brands.

In a statement released to The Ringer, a spokesman for Snapchat said: “The creative process sometimes involves inspiration, but it should never result in copying. We have already implemented additional layers of review for all designs. Copying other artists isn’t something we will tolerate, and we’re taking appropriate action internally with those involved.”

It is not clear if the company has taken disciplinary action in connection with the employees responsible for the copying or ifremedial measures have been taken with the artists whose work has been co-opted for the site’s filters.
