On the heels of Louis Vuitton’s Rio Resort show, creative director Nicolas Ghesquière is fueling industry rumors that he might be parting ways with the Paris-based design house. Ghesquière, who took the helm at Louis Vuitton in late 2013 after spending 15 years at Balenciaga, broached the topic of starting his own line while making an appearance on French television show “Le Petit Journal.” And given the new timeline of creative directors spending only 3 years or so at the helm of a brand, this could be a very likely move.
Speaking of his desire to launch his own collection, Ghesquière said: “I hope so. I could do it.” Fashionsta suggests the latter statement may shed light on a dual role for Ghesquière; LVMH does, in fact, permit Jonathan Anderson to head up his own label, as well as its Loewe brand. The same was true for Ghesquière’s predecessor Marc Jacobs when he was at the helm of Louis Vuitton some years ago. However, given the increasing demands placed on creative directors (one of the reasons so many are jumping ship from the industry’s biggest houses), it seems unlikely that Ghesquière will take on another project. He does, after all, already oversee the largest, most valuable fashion brand in the world.
So, when we can expect a Ghesquière collection (and a parting of ways, maybe)? He said, “I would like to do it soon. I don’t have a date, but I’ll come back to tell you.”
