Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a performance-based marketing strategy in which businesses reward third parties – known as affiliates or publishers – for driving a desired action, such as a sale, lead, or website visit. Rather than paying upfront for advertising, brands compensate affiliates only when a qualifying action occurs, making affiliate marketing a core component of many companies’ digital marketing strategies.

The foundation of affiliate marketing is attribution. Affiliates promote products or services using unique tracking links, referral codes, or other attribution technologies that enable brands to identify the source of a customer’s activity. If a qualifying action occurs, the affiliate may earn a commission under the terms of the applicable affiliate program.

The affiliate ecosystem includes several participants. Merchants or advertisers are the brands selling products or services. Affiliates – which can include publishers, media companies, influencers, loyalty and rewards platforms, coupon sites, browser extensions, comparison shopping services, and other online platforms – promote those offerings. Affiliate networks and technology providers often facilitate tracking, reporting, and commission payments between brands and affiliates. Affiliate marketing offers several advantages.

Because compensation is generally tied to measurable results, it can provide brands with a cost-efficient customer acquisition channel while creating revenue opportunities for publishers and content creators. At the same time, the model depends on accurate attribution and transparent tracking of consumer activity across digital touchpoints.

The industry also presents legal and commercial challenges. Disputes can arise over which participant should receive credit for a sale when multiple marketing channels or intermediaries influence a consumer’s purchase. Brands must also guard against affiliate fraud and ensure that affiliates comply with advertising, consumer protection, and disclosure requirements. As online shopping continues to evolve, affiliate marketing has become increasingly sophisticated. Questions surrounding attribution, tracking technologies, privacy, and the growing role of browser extensions and AI-powered shopping tools are shaping the next phase of the affiliate marketing ecosystem.
