Allegations of Misconduct, Clashes Over Creative Control

At the heart of the controversy is Carlo D’Amario, CEO of Vivienne Westwood Ltd., who has been with the company since 1986. In 2023, an independent investigation reportedly upheld several allegations against D’Amario, including repeated use of homophobic slurs and discriminatory comments toward LGBTQ+ staff. These personal grievances have been echoed by the Vivienne Foundation, which holds the rights to Westwood’s pre-1993 creative works. The foundation has taken issue with the brand’s use of these designs without consultation, most notably in a high-profile collaboration with skate label Palace. The move sparked legal and ethical questions about intellectual property and the monetization of the designer’s legacy.

Corré and the foundation also criticized the brand’s decision to participate in Riyadh Fashion Week, citing Saudi Arabia’s human rights record as incompatible with Westwood’s lifelong activism. Such actions, they argue, dilute the ethical stance that once set the brand apart from its luxury peers.

The Commercial Turn

Underlying these controversies is a broader tension between maintaining brand integrity and pursuing global commercial expansion. Corré has publicly condemned what she described as a “cheap volume direction” that prioritizes scale over craftsmanship. Critics point to a growing number of collaborations and more accessible product lines as evidence of this shift.

This pivot appears to contradict Westwood’s well-known mantra: “Buy less, choose well, make it last.” As the brand increasingly adopts strategies typical of mainstream luxury fashion, its ability to authentically embody Westwood’s activist philosophy has come under scrutiny.

The Road Ahead

The future of the Vivienne Westwood brand remains uncertain. The company faces legal pressure over creative rights, reputational damage from leadership controversies, and a growing disconnect between its commercial actions and the values espoused by its founder. Whether the brand will take corrective measures in the form of leadership restructuring, increased transparency, or deeper collaboration with the Vivienne Foundation remains to be seen.
